Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the novel In the Claws of the Eagle. From Mayerling to Fort Belvedere by Lotis Dolënga, an author better known for her poetry, and places it within the context of the modernization of Romanian interwar prose, particularly in Bessarabian literature. The novel was published in 1937, during a period marked by a departure from realist tradition, when the focus shifted from objective narration to the exploration of inner life and the authenticity of subjective experience. The article highlights that the novel adopts the convention of the intimate diary, complemented by letters, documents, and explanatory notes, in order to create an impression of authenticity and to reconstruct the existential drama of Archduke Rudolf. Historical events are filtered through a subjective perspective, while external reality becomes a pretext for psychological analysis. The author employs various narrative strategies to legitimize the confessional nature of the text, invoking literary sources, historical memoirs, and official communiqués of the time.At the same time, the limitations of the novel, as noted by literary criticism, are also pointed out. Excessive sentimentalism, naive reflections, and narrative inconsistencies undermine the credibility of the diary and compromise the intended authenticity. The author’s direct interventions and the confusion between the narrator’s voice and that of the writer transform the diary into a lyrical masquerade, reflecting the poet’s sensibility more than a convincing psychological portrait of the historical figure. In conclusion, the article regards the novel as a literary experiment representative of the efforts to modernize Bessarabian interwar prose, valuable for its intent and cultural context, yet aesthetically and narratively uneven.
