Summary/Abstract: This study explores the demographic and socio-economic complexities of Bonyhád, a multi-ethnic and multi-religious market town in 19th-century Hungary, using linked data from two censuses (1857, 1869) and extensive genealogical records. Bonyhád's history fostered diverse population groups with distinct spatial and occupational patterns, including Germans, Hungarians, and Jews, shaping its role as a regional commercial centre. The analysis reveals dynamic family cycles and evolving household roles, with individuals frequently transitioning between simple and complex family structures. It identifies interesting demographic trends, such as higher accuracy in recorded male birth years, correlating with greater male literacy, and relatively stable occupational paths. Residential mobility was strongly influenced by home ownership and occupation, with women exhibiting higher mobility than men, often due to marriage patterns. The study also highlights the profound impact of homeownership on residential stability, revealing significant disparities across religious and occupational groups within Bonyhád. The analysis demonstrates that censuses significantly underreported the complex family structures. Through detailed case studies, the research illustrates intricate relationships involving children from multiple marriages, revealing how multi-source linkage is essential to fully grasp the nuanced realities of historical family dynamics beyond basic census classifications. This methodology provides a vital framework for understanding the complexities of past societies.
