Summary/Abstract: This paper offers a typological description of the representation of clothing in literature. Starting from the thesis that literary attire always serves the character and acts as an emblem of a socio-cultural type, we examine its identity-forming role in simultaneously concealing and revealing. The selection of narratological conventions of dressing includes compositional aspects (paratext, portrait-frame), morphological categories (description and its subtypes: ekphrasis, prosopography, narrative description, commentary, and narration), character typology (individual, group, and transfictional), story chronotope, and stylistic-rhetorical devices (topoi, genre, ideological, and ethnographic markers). The formulaic nature of literary dressing is linked to the very ontology of fictional worlds as incomplete, where the cognitive role of the reader is crucial in their concretization and in filling in the gaps. In the final part of the paper, the sensopoetic aspects of literary costuming and the ways of its sensory mediation are analyzed.
