Summary/Abstract: There is very little knowledge about Jan Huskowski, a writer representing the genre of weird fiction from the first decade of the 20th century. This lack is mainly due to his little-known biography, but also to the insufficient interpretation of his works – novels, short stories, and poetry. This article contains findings regarding the writer’s biography and broad genealogical-biographical and social contexts (including K. Makuszyński, A. Dobrowolski, F. Gwiżdż), which made it possible not only to show Huskowski in his family and community realities, but also to extract the reasons why, due to his deteriorating mental health, he attempted to take the life of a Lviv hotelier. This article is the first of three parts discussing the life and writing of Huskowski, the author of texts revealing a progressive mental illness – probably hereditary schizophrenia – which made him isolated in the Kulpark hospital for the mentally ill, where he stayed for the last 30 years of his life.
