Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the symbolic meaning of selected trees such as the birch, the willow, the pine, and the aspen. These trees not only convey the symbolic meaning of the ongoing action The Peasants by W.S. Reymont, but also reflect the emotional states of the characters and become carriers of information about their inner world. In addition, Reymont assigns symbolic tree features to some characters (Boryna – the oak; Jagna – the apple tree). Poplars deserve special attention, because these trees are silent witnesses to Jagna’s torment and become spiritual confidants of the wrong that befell her at the hands of the cruel crowd.
