Summary/Abstract: The article offers an overview of Alpine imaginaries from the Middle Ages to the beginningof the 20th century. It traces the main stages that led from the monts maudits to theeroticisation of mountains and the overtourism of the 20th century, via the foundationsof a new relationship with wilderness previously laid by the Enlightenment and the subsequentromantic mystical immersion in nature. While landscape perception and theconception of nature are subject to changing patterns of evaluation, evolving ‘sense control’and cultural and social contexts, the fact that the various attributions of meaning tomountain societies and landscapes originated from outside the Alps remains a constantin this centuries-long process.
