Summary/Abstract: Andrzej Wajda planned to make a film about the Spanish Civil War based on the novel L’Espoir by André Malraux (1937) which Jorge Semprún was to adapt for him. The film was never made. The screenplay L’Espoir (dated August 1980) was displayed at the exposition Jorge Semprún. The large voyage in Spain (2024). Wajda’s Notesy (2024) and Semprún’s Montand, ou la vie continue (1983) make possible recreate the circumstances of their collaboration and query why the film project on the Spanish Civil War – by the Polish director and the Spanish screenwriter, who wrote in French – was not completed.
