Summary/Abstract: The concepts and notions of the soul as an immaterial, i.e. spiritual substance, have undergone development and gone through different historical stages. In archaic societies, the idea of the soul of the living is often associated with the vital breath, with air and wind. Gradually, this idea transformed into the idea of the soul as a spiritual entity that transcends physical existence and passes into some form of life in eternity. Is the historical course of the development of the idea of the soul an argument in favor of views according to which the lack of the idea of its spiritual substantial durability in antiquity devalues the soul as an immaterial and acting beyond the material body entity? We will try to answer this question, having previously considered the general plan for the development of the idea of the soul in all religions and cultures. The focus will be on the various terms and concepts that are used to describe what we are accustomed to calling "soul" today, as well as the most important doctrines in which these concepts are embedded in overall worldviews.
