Summary/Abstract: This paper contrasts six of the forty-nine accounts of conscience by Mariana de San José that have come down to us in duplicate. The methodology involves first presenting general data on the modifications identified and then illustrating them with examples from three pairs of accounts. The study leads to a twofold conclusion: when the changes concern phrases or words, the author likely had the original text before her while writing the second version; when they affect statements or larger discourse units, the text was probably not at hand. In both cases, linguistic style is at play, yet the first type of variation can be described as intra-textual, whereas the second corresponds to intra-writer variation.
