Summary/Abstract: This paper compares the use of proverbs containing the term "God" in Don Quixote de la Mancha with a set of religious texts from the Spanish Golden Age. Coseriu's concept of a "universe of discourse" is used to distinguish between the world of reference of literature and that of faith. Proverbs in Don Quixote containing "God" are identified and searched for in CORDE texts (1500-1699) with religious themes. Quantitatively, eight of the 17 proverbs in Don Quixote also appear in the religious corpus. Qualitatively, the different forms and values of the proverbs show internal differences between religious and literary discourses. These differences demonstrate the interplay between discursive universes, worlds of knowledge, reader expectations, and the knowledge shared by writers and readers.
