Summary/Abstract: During the Soviet period, Moldovan cinematography experienced a significant development, being state-supported and considered a propaganda tool The Moldova-Film studio, established in 1952, played an important role in the production of feature and documentary films. After gaining independence in 1991, the Moldovan film industry went through a period of stagnation, and film production decreased significantly. However, in the recent decades, private studios have emerged, adapting themselves to the new economic conditions and producing independent films. A notable example is the film “Nunta în Basarabia” (Wedding in Bessarabia) (2010), a Moldova-Romania-Luxembourg co-production, created without state financialinvolvement. Additionally, the Union of Filmmakers of Moldova, founded in 1962, continues to protect and promote the professional interests of the country’s filmmakers. The cinematography of the Republic of Moldova has traveled a long and challenging road since gaining independence in 1991. In the 30 years of independence, the film industry has faced major difficulties, but recently there have been clear signs of revitalization and adaptation to the new economic conditions. The emergenceof private studios and the production of independent films are concrete evidence of this positive evolution.
