Summary/Abstract: Multilingualism is an important phenomenon that is addressed from various perspectives by countries, societies, and researchers today. Geographical and social mobility, economic and political transformations, cultural and lingusitic changes, as well as the spread of education and technology have made multilingualism one of the key areas of discussion in the contemporary world. Especially migration, population mobility linked to it, and mixed marriages play a crucial role in the spread of multilingualism. Moreover multilingualism is not limited to modern societies; it has been observed throughout different geographies and cultures since the beginning of human history. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of multilingualism from conceptual and historical perspectives, as well as to evaluate its reflections in today’s world. In this context, the study addresses the semantic layers embedded in multilingualism, the proficiency levels of multilingual individuals, and the types of multilingualism (individual, societal, theoretical, etc.). In this descriptive study, which was carried out within the framework of a qualitative research design, the document analysis method was used as the data collection technique. Relevant national and international sources were examined, and analyses were conducted in light of the data obtained. The study aims to contribute to the existing literatüre on multilingualism in Turkey by offering a new perspective, analyzing the historical context and current status of multilingualism, and shedding light on future studies in this field. The information obtained through this study is expected to guide researchers who wish to work in this area.
