The Importance of Medical Illustration in Medical Education in The 21st Century: The Case of Cell Therapy Methods

Summary/Abstract: Illustrations are important visual communication tools frequently used in advertising, publishing, and scientific fields. In scientific fields, particularly in medicine, illustrations enable the rapid and accurate transfer of information that is difficult to express in words to the public through scientific publications and educational processes. Presenting medical information, human anatomy, and pathological findings to the target audience accurately through up-to-date technological programs increases the effectiveness of education. Visual expression methods have been a critical element in medical education and the dissemination of information throughout history. Throughout the history of medicine, surgical scenes, disease processes, anatomical and pathological findings have been depicted in an understandable and realistic way through illustrations. In the 21st century, medical illustrations are produced in 2D (two-dimensional), 3D (three-dimensional), and animation formats using computer programs, in line with technological developments. These methods enable medical students to more easily comprehend clinical cases and preoperative processes with the support of visual expression methods and animation. The long and laborious process of cellular treatments conducted in laboratory environments makes the use of medical illustrations virtually mandatory. Illustrations convey these processes in a concise and detailed manner, while animations show the changes and transformations throughout the process. This research depicts the stages of surgical and pathological techniques through medical illustration, examining their contributions to medical education and technological transformations in this field. The aim of the study is to examine the role of medical illustration in knowledge transfer and medical communication in medical education within a historical context and to present a 3D application example in this context.
