Summary/Abstract: The writing of this paper was inspired by a gift for the collection Embroidery and Lace of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade. It’s about two framed sleeves with two different shirts. The sleeves were unfolded from the shirt, they lost their use value, so the heir decided to frame them and thus preserve the memory. The items were made by the donor’s mother, Milka Stojičić (1909-1991), née Dumuzin, born in the village of Medna in the municipality of Mrkonjić Grad. On the sleeves are embroidered motifs of Zmijanje embroidery, known among the people as the feathered cart (on one sleeve) and the motif of 25 apples (on the other sleeve). Since the heir passed away, his sister Jovanka, in agreement with other family members, donated the items to the Ethnographic Museum on behalf of the family. The fact that the embroidery from Zmijanje is inscribed on the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity prompted them to donate the object to the museum. The objects and the desire to be preserved correspond to the way in which the donor recognizes the museum, as a place where traditional values, memories and identity are recognized and preserved. Objects have undergone a transformation, they have been transformed from a traditional clothing item into a decorative object, from a clothing item to framed paintings for the wall. In fact, they have found a new use in a different social cultural context. The primary function of the objects has changed, the costume has been taken out of use and these items have become family memorabilia at the skilled hands of their mother, but also of the homeland from which they originate. In the first part of the paper, an (individual) memory of the donor is given, which refers to the donated object. This is followed by a text on the characteristics of the Zmijanje embroidery, which refers to the collective memory of the Zmijanje embroidery and finally, the relationship of the individual with the collective, generally accepted and institutionalized attitude towards the traditional cultural heritage of the Zmijanje embroidery.
