Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the collection of Children’s toys of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade and the conditions under which it was created. The empirical basis of the work is ethnographic material and historical material dedicated to the growing up of a child in Serbian culture, with the help of which we can trace the position of the child in the 19th and 20th centuries. A brief overview of the historical circumstances that influenced the development and formation of the family is given. A brief overview of the theories of childhood and the relationship with the child is presented. After all of the above, and given the importance of the toy in childhood and the fact that it is a didactic tool through which the child acquires the knowledge and values of the culture in which he grows up, it is proposed to systematize the museum objects in the collection according to the age of the children. The age category is indispensable when it comes to how a child accepts and understands the information that is passed on to him. This systematization of museum objects from the collection helps us to place the child and his play in a cultural context. We can see how a child’s developmental stages and abilities are treated in the culture in which the child grows up, according to the types and models of toys. Based on the method of production, it is possible to follow the relationship of the environment to the developmental stages of the child and whether and how they are taken into account. The Children’s Toys Collection gives us an insight into the concept of childhood and growing up. We can learn a little more about how a child entered the adult world and what was the position of children in our culture and beyond. The toy completes the game, gives it an idea and content. Toys are a mirror of time, space, society and the individual. They are indispensable material in order to present life in a society in a comprehensive
