Summary/Abstract: Modern life of villages in a number of Serbian regions today could be characterised as sombre. On the other side, there are regions in which villages are highly developed and have birth rate that is high enough. Characterising the life in the villages in so called ”passive areas” in Serbia as sombre seems paradox considering rather fast economic development of these villages in the period after WWII. Contrary to a number of obviously positive economic changes and economic growth, mainly elders today populate such villages and many houses are abandoned. On the other side, in the nearby towns there are many people and families on the existence edge, originating from these villages, who are practicing many activities just to get some money to support their existence. In this paper, I am showing two main groups of social and economic factors that are important to understand why people both in villages and towns do not enter agricultural entrepreneurship when they have good resources for highly profitable organic agriculture. On first place there are factors coming from peasant society, i.e. from peasant way of thinking. Second group of factors are this coming from global society, which should make fair conditions for agricultural entrepreneurship after long-term economic crisis and in period of social and economic transition. Taking all relevant facts in account cause the prevailing strategy among people: eke out a bare existence and waiting for better times. Other strategies – such as different forms of entrepreneurship outside agriculture or combining doing in informal economy and traditional agriculture – are present but not enough developed or thought to ensure fast and thorough economic development.
