Summary/Abstract: The nature of marriages and relationships in the Ottoman court was complex. From the early years of the dynasty, there were intermarriages with local Muslim and Christian families. This is so for many reasons: geographical, religious, political. When we look at the types of marriages in the Ottoman court over time, two major periods with their own characteristics emerge. The first period – from the creation of the state to the time of Suleiman I (1520). Through it, marriages of the first three types predominate: with neighboring, vassal or conquered peoples. This is a time of dynastic marriages. The second period – from the time of Suleiman I to the end of the empire‘s existence, during which we mainly find the last two types of marriages, namely, sultans and princes are mostly associated with female slaves of unknown origin, and princesses with men of the Ottoman race. This is a time without dynastic marriages. In this article, I will examine the first period – from Osman I (1299) to Suleiman I (1520), a time of dynastic marriages.
