Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the social themes in the narrative prose of Alija Nametak, with particular attention to the ideological and poetic principles that shape his literary expression. Although his works contain a wide range of motifs characteristic of interwar social literature, the paper argues that Nametak’s oeuvre does not align with the literary left. Instead, it is rooted in a traditionalist and morally didactic poetics. Through an analysis of selected short stories – particularly those from the collections Bajram žrtava, Dobri Bošnjani, and Za obraz – the paper examines how Nametak constructs social reality as a literary testimony to the collapse of the patriarchal order, identity disorientation, and the tragic consequences of historical upheavals. The study also addresses the reception of Nametak’s prose among his contemporaries, especially authors with leftist literary orientations, highlighting differences in their understanding of literature’s function and their approach to social issues. In doing so, the paper underscores the complexity of Nametak’s prose and the need for its nuanced and responsible literary-historical evaluation.
