Summary/Abstract: India is a vast territory, caught between an ancient and medieval culture extraordinarily advanced for its time, a long period under the brutality of the British Empire, and a multitude of religious beliefs. All these factors have led to the formation of a diverse state and laws that must meet different social needs. Regarding inheritance, there are 2 laws that operate in parallel. This article presents India in brief detail. The religion, the casts, the customary laws that have perpetuated for thousands of years, the prevalent patriarchal society of India, the hardships and challenges that women meet in this patriarchal society and the laws of inheritance in relation to the different castes and religions of India.
