Summary/Abstract: On the basis of bibliographic research of the translation of Petar II Petrović Njegoš’s The Mountain Wreath from its first edition until today, a proposal for the periodization of the history of the translation of Njegoš’s work is established. The author singles out the following four periods (1) 1847–1900 – The first years – from a passage to a whole, from prose to verse, (2) 1901–1945– Establishing a scientific translation as a model for the edition of the translation of the The Mountain Wreath, (3) 1946–2000 – Circles of reception on waves of establishment and the metamorphosis of the Yugoslav state in the second half of the 20th century and (4) 2001–2023 – Expanding the circle of languages into which The Mountain Wreath was translated and establishing the history of the translation. The mentioned method of periodization exceeds its functionality if you bear in mind the historical events that marked each of the mentioned four periods – The Revolution of 1848/1849; First and Second World War; the establishment of the Yugoslav state and the metamorphosis of its state and political organization during the 20th century... Within the above-mentioned periodization, the appearance of the first and new translations of The Mountain Wreath from some of the 20 world languages, the personalities of the translators of Njegoš’s work, and the significance of the paratextual parts of the translation are highlighted. The layers of meaning of the work, the form of its verse, and the necessity to preserve the authenticity of the work and its language and to achieve the comprehensibility of the translation were pointed out as the three basic challenges of translating The Mountain Wreath from 1847 to the present day.
