Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the phenomenon of the sequence of tenses (SOT) in the French language and its possible transposition into the BCMS language. The research focuses on the functional correspondence between the French system of tense agreement and the BCMS interpretation of temporal relations based on the dichotomy of absolute and relative tenses. The aim of the study is to explore how temporal coherence is achieved in translation when the BCMS language lacks a formally codified system of tense consistency. By analyzing examples from David Albahari’s novel Bait, the paper examines how aspectual distinctions and contextual indicators compensate for the absence of formal tense agreement. The results show that French allows for a wider and more systematic use of verb forms, while BCMS achieves temporal coherence through contextual and aspectual means.
