Summary/Abstract: By studying the structural and functional aspects of female characters in Dušan Đurović’s novels, a more purposeful understanding of the complexity of his narrative is achieved. The reproductive functions and symbolism of the female body reflect patriarchal norms through which their identities are constituted. In addition, women are also presented in typically male roles, in physical labor, while the role of the female ideologue, a rare example in Montenegrin literature, is manifested through the modernist profile of Zaga, a heroine who subversively challenges entrenched ideological patterns. While the novel Duklja’s Land is dominated by a Montenegrin, rural, and war-affected chronotope, which further emphasizes the position of women under patriarchal repression, the novel The Scent of Rowan Trees primarily portrays an urban, bourgeois chronotope in which the feminine identity is shaped through introspective techniques. The ambiguity in behavioral codes represents the complexity of female identity, emphasizing how social motivation and individual sensuality intertwine in constituting the structure of the female being. Through the analysis of the structure and functions of female characters in the novels Duklja’s Land and The Scent of Rowan Trees, narratological, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions intertwine, reproducing through synthesis a multilayered image of womanhood within the South Slavic literary context.
