A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE SERBIAN PHILOLOGY AT THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the role of audio recordings in the preservation, but also in the study of the Serbian church chanting, with particular focus on the first project of recording traditional liturgical chants, which led to the edition Rasadnik srpskog pravoslavnog crkvenog pojanja (The Nursery of Serbian Orthodox Church chanting, 1933). The analysis of the content of the 78 rpm gramophone records reveals the important role of Lazar Lera, a respected chanter and teacher from Zemun (born in Ciacova), in preserving Serbian church chanting in the inter-war period. The text also announces the upcoming edition of The Nursery in contemporary audio format (mp3), prepared based upon the digitalised audio material. In its initial form, the Department of Slavic languages existing starting the 1949/50 academic year, with the Lectorates for the Bulgarian, Czech, Polish, Slovak and Serbo-Croatian languages within the Philology Faculty of the Bucharest University. The foundation for the affirmation of the Serbian language in Bucharest are the numerous students of Romanian ethnicity who had the privilege to absorb knowledge from the founders of academic Serbian studies in the capital. An even more important aspect from the ethnical structure of the students in this academic-cultural space was the hiring of universally educated and competent individuals.
