Summary/Abstract: In five homilies John Chrysostom devotes his attention to Hannah, the mother of Samuel (1 Sam 1–2). The preacher delivered the first three homilies most likely in 387 in Antioch, during the second year of his priesthood: the remaining two perhaps later. Beyond presenting an ideal of motherhood, Chrysostom outlines certain features of Christian life, above all the ideals of prayer and sacrifice. This article focuses on these two aspects of Christian spirituality, which essentially summarize Chrysostom’s thought in De Anna. In the homilies, the preacher criticizes the Antiochenes for their lack of faith or its superficiality. This issue forms the background and justification for the further elements of spirituality he discusses.
