Summary/Abstract: The text outlines the structure and the main strategies for solving the problem of modal variation. The reasons for the inadequacy of the options of rejecting the premises of modal tolerance and the necessity of tolerance or accepting the hyper-tolerance conclusion are indicated. I argue that, despite its notorious counter-intuitivity, counterpart theory can be considered to be the most promising approach to the problem.
