Summary/Abstract: The major objective of this paper is to provide a genealogical analysis of the specific type of trust built in the hybrid traffic as a multi-agent system. On a macro-methodological level, I aim to clarify the origin of the different human agent (HA)-autonomous vehicle (AV) trust relationships, taking into account that AVs can meet the requirements of an implicit ethical agent in the best possible scenario. Considering that the artificial agents fulfill the criteria of the rational account of trust, but not those of the affective and normative accounts, since they are deprived of moral motivation and moral entanglement (Ryan 2020), one should argue for reliable rather than trustworthy AVs. In this context, the visions of trusting ‘ethical’ AVs (Kock and Lannquist 2022) can be questioned by introducing the so-called epistemology cum ethics (Russo, Schliesser and Wagemans 2023) that is grounded in the concept of interagential trust. The major benefit of fostering such an epistemology concerns the way it contributes to building trustworthiness ethics that is based on, without being reduced to the so-called justified trust ethics (Nickel 2013; Serafimova 2022).
