HERITAGE AND MEMORY: THE ROLE OF ORAL HISTORY IN THE PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

Summary/Abstract: Oral history research facilitates uncovering cultural heritage values that are hidden, forgotten, at risk of fading, or threatened with extinction, thus serving as a vital tool in transmitting these values to future generations. In this context, the study aims to identify the areas in which the oral history method is utilized in the preservation of cultural heritage. To achieve this, a literature review was conducted, and 129 scientific studies conducted using the oral history method over the past fifteen years were analyzed through content analysis. The content analysis revealed that oral history research has been conducted in nine cultural heritage categories. The top three categories with the highest number of studies were identified as "Social structure/lifestyles/traditions and customs," "Institutional history," and "Cultural and historical sites/areas/structures." In the discussion and conclusion section, an evaluation is presented on how the data obtained through the oral history method can contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage, with a particular focus on tourism as a tool for raising awareness and protecting this heritage.
