Summary/Abstract: The adoption of the euro in Bulgaria is an important step with major effects on the country’s economy and institutions. This paper outlines the key challenges Bulgaria must address before joining the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). These include meeting inflation targets, completing structural reforms, maintaining fiscal discipline, adapting the banking sector, and gaining public support. The paper also discusses the limits created by Bulgaria’s currency board, which has ensured stability but reduces policy flexibility. The analysis uses insights from theory and from the experience of recent euro adopters, such as Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the Baltic states. It shows that the short-term costs of euro adoption can be noticeable, especially through price increases and institutional changes. However, the long-term benefits depend on strong reforms, clear communication, and improved institutions. The paper concludes that introducing the euro in Bulgaria is not only a monetary change but a broad strategic process that requires coordinated economic, administrative, and political preparation
