Summary/Abstract: Bulgaria’s prospective accession to the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) represents a major structural transition with important implications for domestic financial markets. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of how EMU integration is expected to influence interest rates on credit in Bulgaria by examining theoretical mechanisms, institutional dynamics, and empirical evidence from recent euro adopters. The analysis identifies several channels through which euro adoption typically affects lending conditions, including the elimination of currency risk, reductions in sovereign and banking-sector risk premiums, deeper financial market integration, enhanced monetary policy credibility, and increased investor confidence. Using a comparative framework grounded in historical experiences of Slovenia, Slovakia, the Baltic states, and Croatia, the study demonstrates that EMU membership generally leads to a sustained decline in both short-term and long-term lending rates, particularly in small open economies with strong external financial linkages. Although short-term transitional effects—such as price convergence, temporary inflationary pressures, or market uncertainty—may briefly affect credit markets, these disruptions are typically limited in duration and magnitude. The findings suggest that, for Bulgaria, euro adoption is likely to produce a net reduction in borrowing costs across households, firms, and the public sector, while also contributing to greater financial stability and improved credit allocation. The overall impact will ultimately depend on the pace of structural reforms, regulatory alignment, and the robustness of domestic financial institutions during the transition to full EMU membership
