PROF. DR SLOBODAN Ž. GLUMAC (1930–1998): LIFE AND WORK

Summary/Abstract: Slobodan Ž. Glumac was a biologist, entomologist, and university professor. In 1954, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad. He earned his PhD in 1957 from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics at the University of Belgrade. In 1961, he became head of the newly established Department of Biology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad. At the Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Novi Sad, he rose through all academic ranks and was appointed Full Professor in 1969. He taught at the Faculties of Agriculture, Technology, and Philosophy, all within the University of Novi Sad. His most significant and most numerous works were devoted to the taxonomy of hoverflies (Syrphidae). In addition, he made notable contributions to insect ecophysiology. Over the course of his forty-year academic career, Glumac held numerous key positions at both the Faculty and University levels. He served as Head of the Department of Biology (1963–1971), Director of the Institute of Biology (1983–1988), Dean of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics (1981–1983), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Novi Sad (1971–1973), and President of the Council of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics (1976–1979; 1989–1991). His engagement with Matica srpska was also of great importance. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the Matica srpska Journal for Natural Sciences (1963–1977) and its Editor-in-Chief (1977–1996). He additionally served on both the Executive and Management Boards of Matica srpska, acted as a Secretary General of Natural Sciences Department, and was the Vice-President of Matica srpska from 1991 until 1998.
