Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the meaning that myth as a poetic category receives in the novels of Goran Petrović. A semiotic analysis is performed on quotes taken from the novels "Atlas opisan nebom" and "Opsada crkve Svetog Spasa" in which lexemes with the root word myth appear, on the basis of which three characteristics of myth in Petrović's work are distinguished. 1) In relation to history, myth stands as a fairy tale on the basis of which reality arises, while history is made from reality. In this relation, the transition from myth to reality is naturally conditioned, while history represents an artificial and ideological creation made on the basis of reality. 2) In the relationship between myth and science, a relationship of binary oppositions, but also of complementarity, is simultaneously created. While strictly speaking, science is based on facts, which is why myth is considered a fantasy from a scientific perspective, science simultaneously needs mythical enthusiasm in order to be productive. 3) Myth represents the creative urge, the ecstasy that is necessary for creation and that is transmitted from the creator to the audience (observers, readers). It simultaneously encourages the creator to create something new and to rediscover the myth itself.
