Summary/Abstract: In this study we have examined the monastic communities and seals of the 24 monasteries, sketes, and hermitages of Bukovina, as they appear on the “oath of allegiance,” signed by the abbots and other members of the communities in September 1777, as a preparatory stage for the actual taking of the “oath,” which took place in Chernivtsi on 1/12 October 1777. The 24 communities are divided as follows: ten “large monasteries” (Putna, Sucevița, Dragomirna, Moldovița, Voroneț, Solca, Humor, St. Elijah, Ilișești, and Pătrăuți), thirteen sketes (Babin, Bereznița, Broscăuți, Coribnița, Crișceatec, Horecea, Jadova, Luca, Mămăești, Ostra [Bărbești or Calmuțchi], Vyzhnytsia, Voloca, Zamostia), and one hermitage (the Hermitage of Putna).
