Summary/Abstract: The castle in Krzepice was founded by King Casimir the Great at the border crossing over the Liswarta River. Its medieval form remains largely unknown, owing to the limited scope of archaeological research carried out on the site. Situated at the junction of Silesia, Greater Poland, and Lesser Poland, the castle played a key role in the region’s defence. Its military significance is attested by surviving inventories of firearms belonging to the stronghold, preserved from the 16th century. In the Middle Ages, the castle was besieged only once, during the 1391 conflict between the Kingdom of Poland and Vladislaus II of Opole, ruler of the Wieluń land. It was likely in the aftermath of these events that a cache of cannonballs was scattered across the town. The link between this collection and the siege of 1391 is supported by medieval chronicles, with Jan Długosz noting that the assault on Krzepice was brief and the castle soon capitulated.
