Summary/Abstract: This study examines the historical development and linguistic features of cartoons in the Ottoman-Turkish press. Emerging alongside the expansion of the press, cartoons functioned not only as a medium of humor but also as an effective tool for political, social, and cultural criticism. The linguistic characteristics of cartoons varied according to historical periods. While the Tanzimat period favored ornate expressions and Arabic-Persian constructions, the Second Constitutional Period introduced a tendency toward linguistic simplification aimed at reaching broader audiences. Through the use of narrative boxes, slogans, wordplay, irony, and idiomatic expressions, cartoons reinforced their satirical and critical discourse, enabling them to bypass censorship and communicate social critique effectively. Furthermore, orthographic conventions of Ottoman Turkish, frequent use of Arabic-Persian izafets, and metaphorical expressions shaped the textual dimension of cartoons. By combining visual and linguistic elements, cartoons not only reflected the cultural memory of their era but also contributed significantly to the transformation of social mentality.
