Summary/Abstract: The most important indicator that a person has mastered their mother tongue is the ability to use the basic language skills effectively and to express themselves well. Acquiring these basic language skills at a good level and using them effectively depends on the acquisition of a rich vocabulary. A person who has a sufficient command of vocabulary items can also use the basic language skills more effectively. From this perspective, the importance of children's literature works, as well as textbooks used as primary educational materials, becomes evident for the development of children's vocabulary. This is because the main factors that influence the vocabulary level of children are the new words, terms, reduplications, idiomatic expressions, proverbs and sayings, politeness formulas, etc., which they acquire from the books they read. In this regard, we believe it would be useful to examine the texts in Turkish language textbooks from a lexical perspective and to determine their contribution to enriching students’ vocabulary. The aim of this article is to identify the lexical elements found in Turkish language textbooks for grades 1 through 4, currently used by mother tongue Turkish language teachers in the Republic of Bulgaria.
