Summary/Abstract: The article presents the complicated and often tragic history of the translation of Jaroslav Hašek’s novel into Russian. Using selected examples, the author also demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of various Russian translations, partly compared to the existing Polish ones. In addition, the paper discusses the reception of Hašek’s text in the USSR and in contemporary Russia where the work remains almost unknown to younger readers . In contrast, over time it is becoming more and more relevant to others.
