Summary/Abstract: This article examines how Mihai Eminescu's "Scrisoarea a III-a" was translated into German by Laurent Tomaigă. The introductory description of the historical context of the poem illustrates the significance of the linguistic images and formulations used. Selected idiomatic expressions and realia identified in the Romanian original are analyzed in terms of their semantic and stylistic characteristics. Concrete text examples are used to show the difficulties that arise when translating such elements into German: while some idioms have a direct equivalent, others require creative solutions in order to preserve the original colorfulness and sound structure. Particular attention is paid to the tension between reproducing the text as faithfully as possible and the need for comprehensibility for German-speaking readers. Various translation strategies are also compared, from literal approaches to freer recreations, in order to illustrate the compromises that must be made in terms of meter, rhetorical figures, and historical allusions.
