Attitudes of Young Residents of Dąbrowa Górnicza towards Urban Challenges: Analysis of Social and Spatial Issues

Summary/Abstract: From a political science perspective, theissue of youth in Polish cities emergesas a complex and interdisciplinary topic,encompassing civic agency, social participation,and engagement in shaping urbanspaces. The aim of this study was to exam‑ine how young people perceive urban chal‑lenges related to sustainable developmentand to what extent they are willing toengage in urban transformation processes.The empirical research was conducted usingthe CAWI method on a non-representativesample of inhabitants of Dąbrowa Górniczaunder the age of 21 (N = 83), employingprincipal component analysis (PCA) withVarimax rotation and cluster analysis. Thisapproach enabled the identification of fivefactors explaining 63.6% of the variance.The results reveal a diverse assessmentof urban life aspects – recreational infra‑structure was rated the highest, while theavailability of consumer services receivedthe lowest scores – and no significant differ‑ences were found between male and femalerespondents. Despite receiving relatively lowscores, housing was not classified as the mostserious issue, prompting a reassessment ofexisting theoretical assumptions. The studyhighlights the growing readiness of youthto engage in urban transformation, whilealso underscoring the need to enhance theirunderstanding of the systemic dimensions ofcity functioning.
