Summary/Abstract: The article examines the evolving interpretation and practical implications of the concept of prisoner of war (POW) within the legal framework established by international humanitarian law, which is the Third Geneva Convention. Focusing on the illegal and unjustified war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine in 2022, the analysis concentrated on how the notion of POW has been subject to complex reinterpretations. The different facets of this concept will be analysed taking into account the hybrid and the high-intensity nature of the conflict, in order to identify and critically assess the main emerging challenges that could potentially threaten to undermine established international norms governing the protection of POWs.
