Summary/Abstract: This article investigates how the approach of Kosovo’s authorities to their security posture has evolved over the last two decades, since the unilateral declaration of independence in 2008, highlighting the main milestones pursued in order to achieve their enduring aim of becoming part of the Euro-Atlantic structures. The work focuses on the steps undertaken by the Kosovar authorities, supported by several Allies, which allowed for the establishment of a functional defence force, capable of being deployed abroad. Despite heavy investments in modern capabilities and important defence budget allocations, the research concludes that there are both external and internal hurdles that hamper Kosovo’s efforts to upgrade its relationship with the Alliance and emphasise that in the absence of normalisation of relations with Serbia, NATO membership might not be a realistic objective.
