Summary/Abstract: The local referendum has been present in the Polish legal system for over thirty years, andtheir regulation should reflect the views accepted in society. In recent years, voices have appearedin public discourse in favor of the need to make changes to the current statutory regulation of lo-cal referendums. Their authors argue that the current form of local referendums does not meetthe expectations placed in them by the legislator and, above all, by citizens who want to activelyparticipate in making decisions in local matters. As a result, legislative work was undertakenin parliament to introduce changes to the local referendum act. The aim of the study is to presentthe course, conditions and discussions that accompanied the legislative proceedings conductedin relation to the local referendum act in the years 2021–2023, as well as subsequent proposalsin this regard.
