Developing the Digital Edition of the ‘Karta Dawnej Polski’ (1859)

Summary/Abstract: Th e article presents the process andresults of the development of a digital edition ofthe ‘Karta Dawnej Polski’ (KDP) [Map of Old Po-land], published in Paris in 1859. Th e text outlinesthe history of the map, discusses its mathematicalfoundations, sources of information, and the scopeof its content. Th e methodology for developing thedigital edition is also presented: the source ofthe edition, the calibration and mosaicking of themap sheets, the structure of the spatial database, andthe principles of map indexing, transcription,and transliteration of proper names, and identi-fi cation of selected localities. Th e method of pub-lishing the digital edition is explained. Th e authorsalso attempted to assess the map’s reliability.
