Summary/Abstract: More than one hundred documents are preserved in Jenő Janovics’ archive in Cluj-Napoca, documenting his efforts to obtain exemption from the so-called Jewish Laws. As a former theater director and prominent Hungarian intellectual, he was required to prove that he had been a “good and faithful Hungarian” in Romania, after 1919. Though he never identified himself as a Jew, Janovics pursued exemption in order to secure himself a public role after the Second Vienna Award. This study examines the correspondence between Janovics and the Hungarian authorities and traces the increasingly limited opportunities available to him.
