Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the civil-law framework and legal aspects of the activities of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to explore their role in the development of philanthropy and peace activism from 1995 to 2025. Particular attention is given to the rights, obligations, and legal mechanisms that enable or limit the activities of these entities.Philanthropy is defined as a principle of humanitarianism, benevolence, and solidarity, aimed at the welfare of others or the community, while peace activism involves mobilizing social resources to promote reconciliation, build trust, and strengthen social ties.NGOs, foundations, socially responsible companies, and other institutions implement philanthropic and peace initiatives through their activities, becoming significant actors in civil society and influencing the creation and implementation of social and public policies. Their civil-law status is reflected in their legal recognition, rights and obligations, accountability, and the way they pursue public interest through legally defined forms of action.Mapping the philanthropic and peace ecosystem in Bosnia and Herzegovina is highly important for the legal and social shaping of public policies, with international donors contributing to the development of the NGO sector through financial and institutional support. A survey conducted at local, cantonal, entity, and state levels included leaders and activists from relevant organizations and institutions, providing insights into the impact of NGOs on formal policy-makers.This study contributes to a better understanding of the civil-law framework and the role of NGOs in managing philanthropic and peace initiatives, highlighting their importance in strengthening civic awareness, solidarity, and the democratization of society.
