LINKED OPEN DATA AND UKRAINIAN NUMISMATICS

Summary/Abstract: Linked Open Data presents historians, museum professional, and other academics with a powerful tool for standardizing, encoding, and sharing data. While its adoption remains uneven, it is a major element in digital publication landscape in the heritage and cultural spheres. Since the mid-2010s, numismatists have been pioneers in the use of LOD to encode, store, and share data on coins, coin hoards, coin types, and so forth. Ukrainian numismatists therefore have at their disposal conceptual and technical models on which to build databases that can be easily shared with users in other countries, as well as with institutions in other parts of the world. This paper has two aims. First, it will show what LOD can do and why the biggest Western museums are investing in it. Second, it will outline the ways in which LOD is as much a philosophy and a methodology as it is a technical specification and a digital infrastructure. It is worth considering what Ukrainian numismatists can do, even if they do not immediately plan to build systems that look like those hosted by the Getty or Rijksmuseum. Starting to apply some of these principles now will mean that subsequent publication and sharing of Ukrainian heritage and scholarship will be more feasible.
