Summary/Abstract: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are few people engaged in the research, history, and genealogy of families, especially Bosniak ones. This is primarily due to the lack of written documents and other historical sources in scholarly institutions (archives, museums, institutes, libraries). Moreover, there are fewer and fewer individuals who know the history of their own families, and even fewer who are familiar with their ancestral roots. Most researchers are enthusiasts who, as amateurs, “explore” information about their lineage and related families, and only rarely manage to publish a book on the subject. However, given the scarcity of preserved old records for study and writing, those who choose to deal with this field must also rely on family stories and legends passed down from generation to generation. One of the few people in our country who dedicated herself to this work was Mevlida Serdarević. Although not a historian by formal education—she was a graduate lawyer—she devoted much time and effort to researching stories and legends of numerous Bosniak, especially Herzegovinian, families due to her own ancestry. She published six books of stories and legends about Bosniak families from Herzegovina and Bosnia, and, together with Dr. Ajnija Omanić, professor emeritus, co-authored the book Bosniak Culture of Conduct, which presents fascinating insights into how people once lived.
