“The Whiteness of Feelings” – Sisterly Elegies by Han Kang and Annie Ernaux

Summary/Abstract: In this paper I analyze the sisterly elegies of the Nobel laureates - Han Kang’s “White Elegy” and Annie Ernaux’s “The Other Girl”. Sisterhood relates both the theme and the poetics of memory of autobiographical works. Elegy writing becomes an attempt to resurrect dead sisters and an act of offering them their own lives through literature. The common affective structure is made of reccuring sisterly categories: anti-language, whiteness, doppelganger, resurrection. The intertwining of two personal narratives about the replacement child’s spectral existence draws a structure of the women writers’s spectro-sisterly idiom. To analyze the texts, I refer to affect theory, spectral criticism and memory studies.
