Summary/Abstract: The church in Kowalów is one of the oldest and most valuable sacral monuments in the Lubuskie region, dating back to the 13th century. Its construction began with the erection of the presbytery, which is the oldest part of the church. In the 14th century, the nave and the western part were added, giving the building a more impressive character. Initially, the church served the Catholic faith, but with the advent of the Reformation in the 16th century, it was transformed into a Protestant church. This change had far-reaching consequences – the original interior and furnishings were destroyed and the building was adapted to the new liturgical functions. One of the most pivotal moments in the history of the church was the great fire of 1803, which severely damaged the building. As part of the reconstruction, it was decided to erect a quadrilateral brick tower over the nave, which gave the church a new, more monumental appearance. Over the following decades, the church remained an important religious and social centre, performing its function until the events of the Second World War. The church suffered severe damage during the war effort and was looted and partially devastated after the Red Army entered. After the end of the war, in 1945, when the Polish population began to arrive in the area, the church was rebuilt and rededicated in the Catholic rite. From then on, it once again became a place of religious worship and spiritual life for the local community. The history of the village church in Kowalow reflects the turbulent history of the region, which has undergone numerous political, religious and social transformations over the centuries. Despite numerous historical turbulences, the church has survived as an important part of the cultural and historical heritage of today’s Lubuskie Voivodeship. Thanks to its architecture and rich past, it is a valuable monument that reminds us of the complicated history of this part of Poland.
