Summary/Abstract: On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the “Orizont” magazine’s relaunch in a new format, the Secretariat of the Timiș County Committee of the Romanian Communist Party (RCP) conducted an analysis of the cultural publication’s activity. This analysis was based on a report prepared by the Propaganda Section of the County Party Committee. Both in the report and in the remarks of participants at the meeting, the activity of “Orizont” during the period 1972–1976 was generally assessed positively. However, the magazine’s leadership and editorial board were criticized (in accordance with the ideological theses of 1971) for publishing only few articles addressing internal and international political events, achievements of the socialist economy, or ideological debates. Additionally, the magazine published only few literary and artistic works reflecting socialist realities, while including “modernist” works deemed inconsistent with Party documents. Consequently, members of the Secretariat of the Timiș County Committee of the RCP requested that political and ideological themes be given a greater presence in the magazine, alongside literary and artistic creations reflecting socialist realities. They also urged the inclusion of topics related to the history of the country, the province, the workers’ movement, and the history of the Romanian Communist Party. At the same time, greater attention was to be given to the achievements of writers, cultural figures, and scientists from Timișoara. To this end, prominent personalities from these fields were to be encouraged to contribute to the magazine. The decisions taken at that meeting led, negatively, to a strengthening of the Party’s control over “Orizont,” including changes in the editorial board to address perceived shortcomings. Fortunately, these changes (as well as proposals for the Leadership Council) maintained prominent cultural figures at the helm of the magazine, who ensured that high‑quality articles continued to be published. Although the space devoted to political and ideological themes remained limited, “Orizont” retained its place among Romania’s leading cultural magazines of the 1970s and 1980s.
