Between utilitarian and artistic. The stoves of the ”Saint Sylvester” church in Bucharest

Summary/Abstract: A short article about the diversity of artistic values concentrated in a place of worship. The chosen example is the Church of St. Silvestru in Bucharest, which recorded a history of its construction and reconstruction, lasting almost two hundred years. The reconstruction of the church, at the beginning of the 20th century, according to the plans of the architect Dimitrie Maimarolu, to different dimensions than the original church, dated 1743, placed the edifice in the series of modernist churches. The parietal painting, the temple with the icons and the religious furniture, bear the signatures of personalities of these artistic crafts. At the same time, in the church, two imposing terracotta stoves are noticeable, with enameled plates, painted with images from Orthodox iconography. The name of the master stove-maker – Ernest Rüffer –, the address of the factory are given painted on a tile. The decoration of the tiles indicates a creation of the artists from the urban ceramics workshop called Troița, under the aegis of the factory.
